One of the biggest mistakes Americans make is trying to elect people who think the same way they do.

Just terrible.

In the first place you’re never going to know what someone else actually thinks, and even if you could they’re never going to align perfectly with you on your views.

Even if you reduce matters to just a handful of issues– or even just a single issue– a representative’s personal beliefs are hardly a guide for their ability to effectuate action or get a deal done.

Under the Constitution the personal views of the representative should be entirely irrelevant. They are not there to serve themselves or see their own opinions brought to life in policy– they are there to serve the people of their district. Only the people’s voice matters.

A representative–as the name implies– must represent the people, not themselves. So Americans should NEVER pick a representative based on their personal views but based on their commitment and capability to represent the people of their district.

That’s all there is to it.
