So woke up about an hour ago to the news that the U.S. had kidnapped– I will just go ahead and use that word–Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro.

Crazy right?

We just sent in an elite military unit and stole another country’s president. Just took him.

That’s nuts.

But…. I am backing President Trump on it, at least for now.

Let me explain why.

Watch this video for my full views

So the constitution gives the president two sets of very different powers.

On the one hand he is our nation’s chief law enforcement officer. He must enforce laws created by Congress in a manner that is fair and just and constitutional. And we–as American citizens– have the right (duty) to deeply protest when he oversteps his bounds and does something contrary to the constitution, like deploying the military or the national guard into our cities without appropriate cause.

So I was VERY concerned when Trump recently tried to send the national guard into our cities and I am VERY glad to see the U.S. Supreme Court force him to back off. (If you like freedom thank a constitutional lawyer guys…)

Americans are free. And must remain free. And neither Trump nor anybody else should be trying to invade our cities with military forces of any kind– and hopefully no matter how far to the right you are you agree with that!

But when it comes to foreign matters things are different. The constitution gives the president unfettered right as the “commander and chief” of our U.S. military to deploy our most precious resource (our military men and women) as he sees fit around the world. He does not even have to consult with congress for 90 days under the constitution. So he is allowed, essentially, to do whatever he wants on the world stage.

Now… that does not mean it is always a good idea. And there are international laws and norms that must be considered. And you know.. risking our service members lives should probably not be done unless there’s a damn good reason for it.

But when we talk about activities on the world stage we are in “hope” land and not “right” land. By that I mean we have the absolute RIGHT as Americans to demand our military not operate domestically. But internationally we can only HOPE the President is making wise and prudent choices and delivering good outcomes with our powerful and brave military.

And Trump has a pretty good track record guys.

He did a GREAT job deescalating the whole Iran/Israel thing recently. He helped maneuver that flare up between India and Pakistan too.

Yeah he stupidly said he was going to solve the Russian/Ukrain and Israel/Gaza thing in 24 hours but he isn’t that good. Only the Czar can solve those problems– and I will, very quickly, if I end up president.

But overall Trump has been very above average on the world stage. He always seems crazy but he acts prudently. At least so far.

Kidnapping Madura is seemingly his craziest act to date, but I think we should give him the benefit of the doubt here.

First, remember all that hoopla about him taking those Venezuelan gang members and sending them to that crazy hell hole in El Salvador? That was nuts right?

I have to tell you I was pretty opposed to that on the surface because I don’t like the idea of people getting “disappeared” off American streets into third-world pits, even if they are gang members (and especially if they aren’t!)

But Trump had a bigger play that no one knew about.

Within days, those guys were out of El Salvador and on planes back to Venezuela in exchange for American prisoners who were released back to the U.S.

Pause.

That’s pretty brilliant.

Trump wanted Americans out of Venezuelan prisons and he used illegal immigrant (accused) gang members to get them out of there. And nobody knew what he was really up to. And it worked!

He didn’t get enough credit for that in my view. It was a very good play.

And who were these American prisoners? I have no information on that but it would not surprise me at all if some of them were “assets”– you know what I mean.

So recently we know Venezuela captured/detained a few more Americans and we also know Maduro was meeting with some Chinese delegates recently. So maybe something more was afoot down there.

Don’t know.

What we do know, of course, is that Maduro was indicted in New York a while back for charges related to the drug trade and apparently there was some new indictment recently and claims of “stolen oil” from Vance– pretty wild stuff.

Ostensibly this all is why Trump grabbed the guy, but I doubt strongly that’s what is really going on here. Many sitting leaders have been indicted by foreign governments- even Trump and Netanyahu– but there is no serious effort to kidnap these folks and have them face trial.

I suspect–expect really– something more is afoot here. And until we find out what it is I think we should back Trump on this. That’s what the constitution suggests.

Now… if it turns out we just risked a bunch of our guys’ lives, lost a helicopter, and created an international incident for no reason. To quote Prince Humperdinck, I’m going to very put out. And people are going to hear all about it.

For now though I am going to assume Trump is acting wisely, if not prudently here. Let’s get some more information before we react.

Those are my two cents.

Let’s see what happens next.

Also don’t you want a thoughtful voice who sees both sides you can actually TRUST in office?

Time to get smart folk.
